Dallas County Moving Tips

Making Your Relocation Easier

Moving day comes with a long checklist of to-dos—not to mention all of the preparation that comes beforehand. The best thing you can do to save yourself time and stress? Be prepared! Use this list of tips as a jumping off point, and gear up for your move in Dallas.

Before You Move

The sooner you start, the easier it'll be! Here's what you should do in the months and weeks before your move.

Organize and declutter

Starting with the rooms you use the least go through each space and decide what you don't actually need and what's worth keeping.

Lighten the load

Once you've narrowed things down, consider hosting a yard sale, posting items online, or donating them to a good cause!

Change your address

The post office will need a few weeks to process your change of address and start forwarding your mail, so be sure to give them advance notice.

Handy Packing Tips

  • Reinforce: Use sturdy, reinforced boxes and a liberal amount of bubble wrap and padding.
  • Innovate: Pack dishes, bowls, plates, and other glass objects vertically, and stuff socks into glassware to minimize the risk of breakage.
  • Pack small: Pack heavier items in smaller boxes so they're easier to carry.
  • Prevent leaks: Place cling wrap around the openings of things like shampoo bottles and lotions, then screw the top back on to prevent spillage. You can also wrap your jewelry in cling wrap to keep it organized!
  • Prepare: Create an "Open First" box with necessary items like toilet paper, soap, instant coffee, tools and box cutters, and paper dishes.
  • Label, label, label!: Write which room each box belongs in on the side, and unpacking will be a breeze. Your future self will thank you!

On Moving Day

It's finally here: moving day! Keep your stress levels low and ensure that things go off without a hitch by using a few of these tips.

Keep important info

Think of the emergency/vital things you need—like first aid supplies, medication, financial records, medical records, IDs, and other important documentation or high-value items—and pack a bag so you can keep them close.

Take an overnight bag

You might make it home before the moving truck or not feel like unpacking everything when you arrive. Pack things like a change of clothes, your toiletries, and a phone charger so you won't have to worry!

Have phone numbers handy

If you're using a mover, make sure your moving foreman's contact information and the Bill of Loading and shipment registration number is easily accessible.

After You Move

Clean first

Your home is a blank slate, and this is the perfect chance to give it a deep clean before you move things in! Get in those hard-to-reach corners, and make your new home shine.

Unpack by room

Just like with the packing process, start unpacking by going room by room, taking things one day at a time. Hopefully, you've labelled your boxes based on where they belong, so things are a little easier!

Enjoy your new home

At the end of the day, make sure you take time to sit back, relax, and enjoy having your new home all to yourself. You deserve it!
