Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16. So, this year what will you do for dear old Dad on his special day of celebration? Here are 12 good ideas that range from simple to trendy.

First, a little history lesson: Did you know that America’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington?

However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the U.S.

Check out a Saturday night show with comedic star Nephew Tommy at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. The same night at the House of Blues, “trashy” comedians and uber popular podcasters H. Foley and Kevin Ryan are put to the test in their latest show. While we’re talking laughs, Dead Dad’s Club unfolds at the Dallas Comedy Club on June 16.

Start with a fine Father’s Day breakfast at Lubbies Bagels in Lakewood. It’s the closest thing to “back east bagels” anywhere in town, with special touches of sweets, sides, and super delicious schmears. The Lubkin sisters may be originally from Jersey, but their genuine smiles are totally Texas. We also like the Bird Bakery and Sadelle’s, both conveniently located at Highland Park Village.

Tex-Mex fuels Father’s Day in Texas so why not enjoy some fresh air and refried beans with Mi Cocina at Klyde Warren Park across the street from the AT&T Performing Arts Center? Then, take off on a walk around the area – there is nothing like it anywhere in America. Or, while we’re thinking Tex-Mex, Escondido off Preston Road is another gem.

What Dad won’t go for BBQ? We recommend Pecan Lodge and Terry Black’s, both on Main Street in Deep Ellum. Or Lockhart Smokehouse in Bishop Arts. All are excellent choices that will have Dad eating out of the palm of your hand (but only after he finishes his brisket).

Maybe something more upscale is the ticket for Dads with more sophisticated tastes. We recommend Bob’s Steak & Chop House in the Hyatt Hotel, adjacent to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center downtown. Or Chamberlain’s Steaks & Fish in North Dallas, or Al Biernat’s in the Oak Lawn area.

Baseball is as All-American as apple pie. Why not take in a minor league game with the Frisco Roughriders. They’ll will be at the tail end of a homestand against Texas League foes, the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Sunday. Maybe pick up some new Riders gear just for Dad.

This might be a little different but here goes: the South Korean K-pop group Itzy debuted in 2019 with the hit single Itz Different” and quickly became an international sensation. They’ll be performing at Toyota Music Factory.

At Texas Trust CU Theatre it’s a night of classic R&B with 12-time Grammy winner Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Tamar Braxton (“Braxton Family Values,” “Celebrity Big Brother”) and El DeBarge “Who’s Johnny,” “Love Always”).
