Considered one of the biggest rock acts in the world, former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighter bandmates have released 11 albums and won 15 Grammy Awards since forming in 1994. Catch their big springtime show in all its glory at Dos Equis Pavilion on May 1 and jumpstart the month.

The unique opera-in-concert version of the first two operas of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle features a cast of internationally renowned singers, and unforgettable orchestration. The Dallas Symphony performs the stirring piece on May 1 and 4 at the Meyerson Symphony Center in the Dallas Arts District.

 

A pair of dance events highlight the month. Transport into a storybook world of Grimm’s fairy tales with magic mirrors, wicked queens, and one of the most famous stories of all time. Avant Chamber Ballet performs Snow White on May 3-4 at Moody Performance Hall in the AT&T Performing Arts District. Hearts melt as an unsightly beast and a young maiden discover that love transcends and transforms outward appearances in a beloved fairy tale. Texas Ballet Theater presents Beauty and the Beast on May 3-5 at the Winspear Opera House.

The award-winning novelist Ruth Reichl’s latest, The Paris Novel, is dazzling new story that takes readers on an adventure of food, art, and fashion in 1980s Paris. She speaks at the Dallas Museum of Art’s renowned Arts & Letters Live series on May 5. As Prime Minister of the U.K., Theresa May was the second female in British history to hold the position and currently serves as a member of Parliament, a position she has kept for over two decades. She speaks at McFarlin Memorial Auditorium as part of the SMU Tate Lecture series on May 7.


Also on May 7, Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Fashion Show & Luncheon comes to the Meyerson Symphony Center. It is considered one of Dallas society’s biggest events each year with a highly-anticipated runway fashion show, and all the glitz that goes with it – and all for a wonderful cause.

With an armload of awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s production of Hamilton has changed Broadway forever with a revolutionary mixture of history, comedy, drama, pop culture, and song. It’s back at the Music Hall at Fair Park May 8-June 9.

The piano and violin collide in the notoriously difficult Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, encompassing everything from knuckle-busting runs to terrifying medieval chant and swoon-worthy variations. On May 16-19 the Dallas Symphony performs at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Now through the end of July, join women artists from the 1970s through today who are inspired by Surrealism, creating work that critiques gender norms, sexism, and racism. He Said/She Said: Contemporary Women Artists Interject is on display at the Dallas Museum of Art.

What started as a modest local event designed to emphasize the true meaning of Memorial Day is now a national movement. Join the Carry the Load Memorial Day March on May 26-27 at Reverchon Park.

Darius Rucker left Hootie & the Blowfish years ago for a successful solo career in country music. Now the original members are back together, performing all their hits on a special reunion tour with supporting acts Collective Soul and Edwin McCain.
